Pregnancy is an important life stage, and we want to make sure you understand how your Start Health plan works during this time, especially around eligibility, coverage, and renewal.

Can I enroll in Start Health if I am already pregnant?

No. Pregnancy is considered a pre-existing condition on our medical questionnaire. If you are pregnant at the time of applying, you would not qualify for coverage.

What if I become pregnant while already on the plan?

If pregnancy occurs after you are already enrolled, eligible pregnancy-related care will be covered through the end of your current policy year.

Renewals During Pregnancy

If your pregnancy extends beyond your policy end date, you would not be eligible to renew until after the pregnancy.

Example: If you become pregnant during Month 4 of your policy and your policy expires during Month 8 of pregnancy, you would not qualify to renew until after delivery.

Delivery Coverage

If you give birth before your current policy period ends, your eligible birth-related expenses will be covered according to your policy benefits and would be eligible to renew if, upon renewing, you qualify after re-completing the health questionnaire.

Adding Your Newborn

If you give birth while covered on Start Health, you may choose to add your newborn as a dependent.

  • Your newborn is automatically covered for the first 31 days after birth.
  • You must notify Start Health and submit the required premium within 30 days to continue coverage beyond day 31.
  • After adding your child, they will have their own deductible (embedded within the family deductible) and your premium will update accordingly.

You can add a newborn or other eligible dependent through your Member Portal or by contacting Member Support for assistance.

Get Added Peace of Mind with Start Shield

Your Start Health base policy already provides comprehensive coverage on a fixed reimbursement schedule-typically 110-145% of Medicare rates. Once your deductible is met, Start Health covers 100% of eligible medical expenses up to our fixed reimbursement schedule. If your provider charges more than the reimbursement rate, you're responsible for the difference.

Start Shield helps when your provider charges more than your base policy covers, after the base policy's deductible has been met. It pays 80% of the extra costs above your base policy's reimbursement, until you reach your Max Out-of-Pocket:

  • $8,000 for individuals
  • $16,000 for families

Once you hit that limit, Start Shield covers 100% of any remaining costs beyond what your base policy pays. Start Shield only applies to in-network procedures and only after the base policy's deductible has been met. All emergency care is treated as in-network.
