The Start Health team had the pleasure to interview Joshua Erickson, Utah Insurance Broker.

Joshua provides insightful commentary on the insurance marketplace and how Start Health benefits consumers more than the alternatives.

“Here’s some of the common things I hear,” says Joshua. “‘We hardly ever go to the doctor,” or, “We only go once a year for a checkup. No pre-existing conditions and no high-cost medications. We just want something there in case something big happens.'”

“Cue Start Health for comprehensive coverage regulated by the Department of Insurance. And as a cherry on top, it has HSA eligibility.”

“Having something that is legitimately regulated by the Department of Insurance, but is not income based, is a really good space to find yourself in as a broker because you’re not going to be able to solve the problem the best way at healthcare.gov.”
“Start Health is an insurance company who is working for YOU instead of the government or the insurance industry.”

“There’s an opportunity here to save some money. We take away some of those administrative functions, but you save a lot of money as a result. That’s one big key.”

“Two: there are no networks–you don’t have to worry about being in or out of network. You can see any doctor. Just make sure that you have some sort of receipt or an explanation of the benefits and the CPT codes. You just submit it on the portal.”
“In addition, you can also shop for care like you shop for a TV, or a sofa, or any other purchase in your life. You’ll see what the reimbursement rate is for the service you need, then call around and say, ‘I’m paying cash, what’s the price?'”

“Cue in the HSA. You have the opportunity to fund an HSA year over year, and use that money if you have to to pay for medical expenses.”

“Our current healthcare setup is meant to help healthcare companies earn more money and hospital systems to charge the most they can. Those are the incentives. Start Health is helping you and your family get out of that and stop paying 400, 600, even 1600 percent more for the same procedure at one facility versus another. Those are real numbers as a broker I’ve seen.”

“So, if you don’t mind a little bit more work and preparation, and you’d like to have more control of your healthcare spend and your healthcare experience, give Start Health a shot.”

“My experience with Start Health has been very pleasant. Start Health arrived at an opportune time in the market to help people who healthcare.gov is not a good fit for, but they don’t want to be uninsured. It’s a totally different way to do insurance and healthcare and I’ve really liked it.”
